Working with other government agencies

We value collaboration

We strive to maintain good relationships with other government agencies and parliamentary committees, community groups, industry bodies, tax practitioners and non-for-profit organisations. Maintaining these relationships has a mutual benefit as it allows for effective communication, collaboration, faster conflict resolution and opens feedback channels that improve process or inform policy development.

Our work with Treasury

We work closely and collaboratively with the Treasury, sharing insights from our complaint handling and review processes to support its policy development and advice to the government.

Our collaborative approach is guided by three key principles:

  • Open communication: We hold regular meetings and maintain clear, accessible communication channels to discuss issues and exchange information.
  • Timely consultation: We proactively engage with the Treasury, informing it of upcoming work plans and seeking its views on key areas of tax administration that may warrant further examination.
  • Independence: Both parties acknowledge and respect each other’s autonomy and statutory roles.

Our protocol with the Australian Taxation Office

The protocol between our agency and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) aims to foster a productive, professional, and efficient working relationship. The protocol defines how our agency is allowed access to ATO files under certain pretence, that guarantees security. It emphasises mutual respect and cooperation to enhance the administration of the tax system. Key components include:

  • Framework for Reviews: We follow detailed steps for conducting reviews, from initial scoping to final reporting, ensuring thorough and transparent processes.
  • Open Dialogue: We are committed to open and honest communication, with an emphasis on ‘no surprises’ in our dealings with the ATO.
  • Coordination and Assistance: The ATO appoints a senior officer to coordinate with us, ensuring timely and effective cooperation during reviews.
  • Final Reporting: We have procedures for the submission and publication of final reports, including opportunities for the ATO to respond to our findings.
